PGR Forum Crop Wild Relative Information System: case studies

For each case study, references are shown in the upper right corner of the page; for example, the original source of the data and the person who entered the data. Also, data standards used in the creation of the cases studies are shown, for example the EUNIS habitat classification and IUCN authority files. Examples of links to data in other systems, or other relevant information may also be shown.

The PGR Forum CWR data model is arranged in three layers: taxon information, site and population information and geographic information:

• The taxon information layer contains general information on nomenclature, biology, uses etc. The degree of relationship of the wild relative to the crop is explained here under "taxon utilisation". Where the genetic relationship is not known, an indication of the degree of relationship can be provided by using the taxon group concept. Maxted et al. have found that for many taxa where genetic information is available, the taxon group concept correlates very closely with the gene pool concept. Thus, in the absence of genetic data on the crop gene pool, the taxon group concept provides an alternative and effective means of assessing the genetic relatedness of CWR to crops. • The site and population information offer site-specific data, for example vegetation and land-use.

• Currently, there is no information stored in the geographic information layer. This part of CWRIS requires further development.
